Multple Systems Atrophy (MSA)

Published by under diagnosis

Question:

What do know about Multiple Systems Atrophy MSA , which  is related  to Parkinson’s?

Oresia

Response:

I have worked with several people who have MSA so I have a reasonable idea of the symptoms that are involved.

All in all, however, I must report that I do not find labels such as are given by diagnoses to be helpful or useful for recovery. They tend to be associated with negative thought forms and give energy to the symptoms which just feeds them.  I make this case in my recent book, Road to Recovery from Parkinsons Disease (www.parkinsonsdisease.me)

So, I personally never wrap labels around diagnoses. That is why I always refer to “the symptoms of Parkinson’s” rather than some amorphous concept of what other people refer to as Parkinson’s Disease.

Naturopath doctor Laurie Mischley agrees with me. She was my guest on my radio show today. She makes the same argument during the interview and in her new book, Natural Therapies for Parkinson’s Disease.

Symptoms are simply signals that something is out of balance which merits our attention – nothing more and nothing less. When we feed the symptoms with worry and fret, they can certainly become problematic.

The important question turns on what is feeding the symptoms in the first place.

The Ultra Mind Solution

Greetings Robert et al:

This is Linda Ralph writing to you. I have written to you a few times now. You may remember me, I am from Victoria and went on the Alaska Cruise. I have something I would like to share with you.

I am  half way through a  newly purchased book, “The Ultra Mind Solution by the author: Mark Hyman, MD. I have had one of Mark’s earlier books , “The Ultra Simple Diet” for years now , and was truly very excited to find two new books  published by him recently,  especially  the one having to do with the brain,  and healing and fixing the brain, entitled: “The UltraMind Solution“. On the cover of this book it says:

“Fix Your Broken Brain By Healing Your Body First”.

And, I really do believe that to be  true. For me, this book reiterates much of what I have learned through your website, Robert. Be it through your blog, your published works  or through information  that I have heard from radio show guests, or through the personal stories written or told, of many folks who are having successes in coping  with PD.

In addition to that, this book is also jam packed with practical information  to help one heal and to enhance the brain.  It has  realms of information , that although pretty detailed at times, does  provide the reader with learning that I feel is relevant and vital. And there are also a personal case studies as well, that seem, ‘bring it  all home’, so to speak, as well as referencing to PD.

Hyman speaks of

‘treating the body as a whole and not as separate entities’.

Now this is not a new idea. But it merits repetition. He too, states, that

‘your brain may be broken, but  it can be fixed’.

This idea certainly rings true of  the last few years findings and  new discoveries about the brain. Many  books and articles have illuded to the fact that you can rewire your brain, you can change it, and maybe you can even fix it.  Outlined in this book is a detailed (but not overly complicated ) way as to what one does to go about  ‘fixing the brain”, and  the methods to follow to have success.

Hyman says that by ‘pinpointing the biological problem one can  then fix it, by  letting the body’s  natural healing intelligence take  over to repair your brain’. He then goes on provide a program, a simple  way to do this through his : Seven Keys to Ultra  Wellness. This is a very well written and helpful  book.  (Another recent book of his, with over  200 recipes, “The Ultra Metabolism Cookbook“, is also an excellent resource.)

If you haven’t heard of him, ( and you probably have) I do believe that you would find this  book  of his, to be another delightful addition and resource for your readers. It is a good read.

There  may be some merit in your readers knowing about this book and its author. Maybe this author could be a guest on your show??

Holistic Approach to Treating Symptoms of Parkinson’s Disease

Hello Robert:

By way of introduction, my name is Howard Shifke and I am in Tampa, Florida. I am 49 years old. Last November, I received my Parkinson’s Disease diagnosis, and my diagnosable Parkinson’s symptoms were traced back to February of 2009.

My mother had Parkinson’s for 24 years before she died, and she had gone through the standard route of her time of years of misdiagnosis followed by years of medications. When she died, she suffered from Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s and dementia. As you know from your own personal experience, this is a very sad ending for somebody you love.

Needless to say, I learned from her experience and from my research, and I have been taking a completely holistic approach to this disease. In March of this year, I began a blog to share my research and look for like-minded people who were fighting Parkinson’s drug free as well (http://fightingparkinsonsdrugfree.blogspot.com). Last month I discovered the Parkinson’s Recovery Project (www.pdrecovery.org) and their information has been fantastic. They have a down loadable 690-page pdf and an important additional chapter, number Forty-Five, which was not part of the original materials.

I began their recommended meditations and affirmations about two weeks ago, and then I studied Yin Tui Na as taught in the PD Recovery research materials. I taught my wife what I had learned and last week she began performing Forceless Spontaneous Release, a form of Yin Tui Na, on my right foot per their instructions. She has been performing Yin Tui Na on my foot for 30 minutes per day for 7 days.

My results: My balance now is very good. For the first time in nine months, I can walk up and down my stairs without holding on. I can get out of a chair without using my arms. I can bring my utensil to my mouth without the cogwheel effect. I can stand up pretty straight and take a stride that I would estimate to be 60-70% of a “normal” stride, and my arms swing naturally. I do not fall asleep sitting at my computer in the middle of the day, and I do not require a daily afternoon nap. I no longer have constipation. I am typing accurately with both hands again, which is a skill I lost in November of 2009. The calluses at the tips of my fingers have disappeared. Much of my rigidity pain has subsided (I mostly feel the rigidity in my upper back, particularly when I focus on standing straight; the pain is probably about 50% of what it was). I still have tremors all the time. However, the tremors are only about 50% of the intensity I used to experience.

I am trying to get the message out that although Parkinson’s affects everybody differently, I have experienced holistic modalities that are getting rid of my PD symptoms. I am hopeful that others may benefit from what I have researched and learned. Please feel free to share this email with anybody you think may benefit.

Best regards,

Howard

Parkinson’s Prayer

Published by under prayer

Gabby is busy writing a book called “Standing Up on the Inside” about her experiences  over the past year covering the pre-diagnosis, diagnosis and post diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease. what follows is a prayer she wrote shortly after being diagnosed.

Dear God, I thank Thee for the opportunity to come before Thee in prayer and thanksgiving this night. The last eight months I found myself walking a path I never imagined walking and I want to thank You for walking that path beside me. There were many days of confusion and frustration, knowing that something wasn’t right with my body but unsure exactly what was wrong.
It was a time when my patience and my trust in You was stretched to the limit and tested-almost to breaking point. Yet you knew how much I could handle as You always permit things to go so far and no further.

I now stand at the foot of a new challenge, with much uncertainty as to how steep the path will become. Nevertheless I do know where the path ends and that is what really matters. I also know that I am not alone and that You are always next to me, sometimes even carrying me, as You have these past months. I know that this attack on my health is an attack of Satan. He is such a fool, thinking that by attacking me and hurting me, he will draw me away from You. You and I know how very wrong he is because, after these past eight months, we are closer than ever before and sometimes, when You hold me in Your arms, I feel so close to You, I can almost hear Your heartbeat. There are times, when the days feel too long, that You take me by the hand and encourage me to keep going. When night falls, the best part about going to bed, is knowing that I can fall asleep in Your arms.

I thank Thee for Thy goodness and mercy and for the many blessings and gifts You send me each day. Thank you that I am able to go for a walk every day and experience the magnificence of Thy creation. Every day You send me another gift, whether it’s a butterfly or African Hoepoe or a bunch of dainty little veld flowers, each one brings me such joy. Thank you for my eyesight and the ability to hear different sounds. Please God help me to make the most of each day and always find something to be grateful for.

Thank you for the love, support, prayers, generosity and friendship of all my family members and friends. Their love and support is so tangible and their prayers have carried me through a difficult time. I pray for my darling mom, because I know this is a test for her too. I thank You for her special love, support and friendship and I pray that You will comfort her and give her the strength she needs. Thank you for my darling dad, who recently showed me just how close he is, in a short but wonderful and comforting dream. I also thank You for my guardian angel, who I know is always with me, guiding, encouraging and supporting me. May he know how much I love him.

And now, dear God, I wish to repeat to you the words taken from Hinds feet on High Places, “I will go down with You into the wilderness, even if you cannot tell me why it has to be. I will go with you, for you know I love You and You have the right to choose for me any path that You please. “ Thank you God that I know that I do not need to waste today’s energy worrying about tomorrow, but can take one day at a time, knowing that I’m in Your hands and You are my compass, always there to steer me in the right direction. Please help Michaela and Danielle, as I’m sure in some ways this will be a test for them too, as we are required to make changes to our lifestyle. Guide us in finding a new home where we can be happy and have all our pets with us.

Dear God, help me to be an example to my girls, showing them that no mountain is too high to climb and no valley too deep or too dark to enter. For it is our journey through the valleys that builds our character and gives us strength to climb the mountains. I will now go forward along this pathway, knowing with a certainty that whilst I have this condition, it will never have me and although it affects my body, it will never touch my soul or spirit because they belong to Thee and are overshadowed by Thy wings for eternity.

I am not alone because I am blessed to be able to walk with Thee, my Friend and this indeed is a true blessing, for which I am so grateful.

Praised, Hallowed and Glorified be Thy Holy Name forever, Amen”

Roller Coaster Ride

Published by under recovery,Stress and Parkinsons

Gabby gave me permission to post her e mail to me today in response to one of my newsletters. May her strength and courage be an inspiration to us all.

Robert Rodgers, PhD

Thanks Robert for this much needed inspiration. I got a lump in my throat and tears in my eyes because it felt like you were describing me to a T. I feel like I’m on a roller coaster and never know what to expect from one day to the next.

On good days I feel great (like the old me) and sometimes even catch myself wondering whether my diagnosis was accurate. Then suddenly, out of nowhere, I’ll have a few really bad days, my tremors will get worse and my chest muscles are in such pain I struggle to breathe. Having historically been a very healthy and active person who has also been a bit of a control freak, I am struggling to adjust to my new life of uncertainty.

Having said that I am very spiritual and know that God has literally carried me this last year. I also believe very much in the power of our minds and as a single mom of 2 teenagers I just have to cope. It has helped me to remain as positive as possible, put my head down and just push through, taking one day at a time and knowing that God is there to help me when the going gets tough.

I have just recently started a new job which is extremely pressurized and stressful and I am really struggling to keep my head above water but don’t really have a choice. I have been quite concerned about the effect this is having on my condition but your email has encouraged me to just remain positive and believe that I can cope and I will be okay!

Thank you.

Gabby
