I know nothing about candida, but I got a couple of takeaways (from listening to your radio show with Lydia Epp). One is that anyone with PD symptoms (or without them) should stop eating large or significant amounts of refined sugars and carbohydrates NOW. It does not matter whether there is a causal relationship there or not, nor does it matter which was first, “the chicken or the egg”. PD’ers should adopt an organic, holistic, clean eating diet and lifestyle. This is mainstream nutritional and medical advice. Even if you are at a normal weight and in perfect health, with no dietary intolerances, you should care for that gift by eating clean and demanding the avoidance of chemical pesticides, preservatives, sweeteners, and the like. The damage they do does not become evident until later in life, when it is more difficult to reverse.

I think you said it best yourself, Robert, (paraphrasing): If you are looking for someone else to “fix” your health, you will get worse. If you take charge of your own health, you will get better.

In my book, Road to Recovery from Parkinsons Disease, I included a discussion of the connection between candida and the symptoms of Parkinson’s which was inspired by research article published in 2006 by Lidia Epp and B. Mravec. http://www.bmj.sk/2006/107067-01.pdf

Until this week, I assumed the theoretical argument in the article was derived through meticulous logic and good guesswork. The argument is certainly convincing and is grounded in meticulous logic. Little did I know, however, the real story behind why Lidia Epp developed the argument and published the research article.

What follows is an email sent by Lidia Epp that explains the reasons she was motivated to do the research and write the article. Author of this fascinating article Lidia Epp will be my guest on the Parkinsons Recovery Radio show on March 23rd.

Robert Rodgers, Ph.D.
Parkinsons Recovery
www.parkinsonsrecovery.com

I’m molecular biologist, I work in a Biology Department in a small college in Virginia. At the time of writing the article I worked as a research specialist at the Molecular Lab in Medical College of Virginia. So – I do not work in the field of PD research, however I’m proficient in biochemistry and clinical molecular diagnostics.

The reason for investigating possible causes of idiopathic PD is entirely personal. My ex-husband was diagnosed with it at an early age of 43. He was one of the patients receiving massive doses of Mirapex in the mid-late 90s, before the devastating side effects of that drug became known. His reaction to Mirapex was very severe, with all the usual OCD, gambling compulsions, etc. It ruined our marriage.

After being divorced for about 5 years I noticed some symptoms in myself that resembled my ex-husband health issues. In the meantime I remarried and my “new” husband mysteriously developed similar health problems. It became apparent to us that it is a contagious condition – mildly, as it took years to develop symptoms. So – that’s when I started investigating possible connections.

Long story short – I contacted Dr. OrianTruss in Birmingham, AL the main authority in chronic candidiasis research, and was his patient for about 1 year. I read all his articles and books and that was the time when I came to my conclusion about the connection between PD and Candida. I contacted my ex-husband; he has a doctorate in molecular biology and as soon as I told him my “theory” he agreed with me. He too became Dr. Truss patient and to the best of my knowledge – he is now PD symptoms free. At the time I contacted him however, his PD was very advanced. He had to retire from his professorship, had DBS and was partially paralyzed.

While working on my article I contacted Dr. Mravec in Bratislava, he is PhD, MD immunologist. He agreed to review my article, offered some suggestions and changes and then had it published at his Medical College in Slovakia.

I continued to evaluate all information pertinent to PD/Candida association ever since – it bothers me that so few in the mainstream medicine seem to notice the obvious connection. I’m convinced that although my theory is a correct one, it’s only the “tip of an iceberg”. The biochemical pathways of Candida and it’s relations to PD symptoms are much more complex that I presented in my paper. I’m now certain of at least one more – tissue transglutaminase (TTG) – it’s role in apoptosis of dopamine receptors and the fact that TTG substrate is used by Candida in it’s life cycle. TTG is a hot topic now in the biochem research world, but – no word on that connection yet in the published data.

I contacted a professor at University of Alabama, pathologist specializing in TTG biochemistry and presented him my TTG/Candida/PD connection theory. He was very enthusiastic, agreed to corroborate with me and even do a preliminary study on a rat model in hopes to receive a grant. But as soon as I explained him my background and the fact that it all started with my ex-husband having PD – he ceased all contact with me.

A couple of years ago I approached another scientist who works in the field of ethiopathology of H. pylori (a connection to Candida – possibly) and I received very similar reaction. I’m now sure that revealing that my ex-husband is in this equation seems detrimental to the validity of my theory. I know I’m not a PhD specializing in the field, but I do know that my theory is correct, I just don’t expect everybody to believe me anymore.

Lidia Epp

Question:

I would like to know if there is any information available about a connection between Parkinson’s and Candida Albicans?

Dorothy

Response:

I am convinced there is a direct link between fungus infections in the body and the symptoms of Parkinson’s. I am also convinced there is a powerful connection between thoughts and the prevalence of candida yeast infections in the body.

I discussed the connection during my Parkinsons Recovery radio program which aired on May 7, 2009. You can listen to the full program by visiting the radio program page, and then scrolling back almost a year to my May 7th, 2009 program. The program is titled “Five Steps to Recovery from Parkinson’s disease.”

Once you arrive on the radio program website you will have to scroll back through the programs that have aired. At the bottom of the page there is a link that says “previous programs.” Keep clicking on that link until you roll back to this particular program.

I begin with a discussion about the profound relationship between thought forms and the symptoms of Parkinson’s which is the theme of my book Five Steps to Recovery. I then discuss the connection between candida (or yeast infections) and thought forms. Once you locate the program and start listening, hang in there. I begin discussing the link about 5 minutes into the show.

To hear the program (or download it) visit www.blogtalkradio.com/parkinsons-recovery.

You will also note there is a category link at the right of this blog titled “candida.” Click on that category now and you will see several articles on the topic of candidate.

You won’t find this information anywhere but here at Parkinsons Recovery!

Questions

What correlation is there between Candida and Parkinson’s Disease?

There is no direct evidence of a connection, but I personally believe there is a significant link. Thought forms have a pronounced influence on symptoms. When we carry consciously or unconsciously many negative thought forms, it will be virtually impossible to recover.

The little, live critters that reside in our bodies from candida are nourished by negative thought forms. Get rid of the candida and it will be a whole lot easier to dump your negative thought forms. There are marvelous gentle detox programs that can help release candida. Why not go for it?

How much do genetics play in a disease such as PD? I was diagnosed with PD two years ago. I lost a son to suicide and a year later had all of my amalgam dental fillings removed and replaced with porcelain fillings? About 6 months after, I began noticing symptoms that concerned me. My father had PD following a fall where he hit his head pretty hard. He had a long fierce battle with PD for 20 years, and I took care of him for much of that time.

Estimates vary, but fro 12-17% of people with Parkinsons’s are found to have a genetic link. Researchers have found over 10 genes that have some link to Parkinsons. There is a lot of interest in one gene in particular.

The question for you is the possibility that you may have taken on the diseases of prior family members out of love. I will be interviewing soon Dee Yoh, a family constellation facilitator, who will explain to everyone how the process of taking on disease out of love works. I hope you can join us for that discussion. If you would like to be a guest for that teleseminar, let me know.

I am so grateful for the information I have come to read about the possibility of full recovery of PD symptoms by getting the body back into balance. I have enjoyed this site immensely and appreciate the wealth of information it contains, and the fact that it is updated continuously.

Thanks for your kind words. That make my day and help to keep my own thoughts positive.

I would like to begin tracking my symptoms so that I can begin the 12 step program and track my progress, however the tracking program is not up and running? Do you know when that will be available?

Oh yes, the tracking program is up and running. Go to http://www.parkinsonsrecovery.com and click on symptom tracker icon. Click register. Enter a username and password. You are good to go.

Thank you so much for all you have done to give those of us HOPE where none was thought possible.

With faith anything is possible!

Question

Have you ever heard of a connection between
candida and Parkinson’s?

Response

I am going to answer your question in two parts.
First, I have never seen any research that
considers candida as a factor that causes the
symptoms of Parkinson’s. I must also admit
that I have not done a search to make sure
this observation is correct, but I am almost
positive it is.

The next part of my answer addresses your
question: is there a connection? My answer is
unequivocally yes.

Candida obviously does not cause the
symptoms. Removing candida will not,
in my opinion, relieve all symptoms. But,
candida obstructs the natural process of
digestion. I do know that the more you
can get your digestive system back on
line, the more relief you will get from
your symptoms.

I am guessing this may be your body’s way of
telling you not to eat sugar. There are great
natural substitutes. Sugar is one of the most
deadly neurotoxins that exists. If you can stop
ingesting sugar, you will feel better.
