As a psychologist, Dr. Fenwick helps people heal from the inside out.

Question:

We have benefited from reading your news posts. You have so much to share. I want to ask your opinion about the Theracycle. Do you know Parkinson’s sufferers who have benefited from this? Do you have testimonials or contacts or can you give my email to one of these. We are trying many of the suggestions we have heard about in your posts. I would like to get this equipment for my husband.

Best regards,

Karima

Response:

Thanks so much for your e mail. I am so glad to hear you benefit from my posts. Be sure to catch the radio program too if you have the chance. I interviewed Deborah today on the show!

http://www.blogtalkradio.com/parkinsons-recovery

On the Theracycle:

I do not know anyone specifically who has benefited from the Theracyle product. The principle of forced exercise is discussed in my radio program on April 23, 2009 with Dr. Jay Alberts, an exercise researcher from the Cleveland Clinic. Jay tells me he thinks that forced exercise might be helping to rewire the brain. His early research suggests that it may provide benefits that are equivalent to current Parkinson’s medications.

You can likely get the same benefit from using equipment at the health club that forces the person to go at a faster pace than they can do on their own. I personally think a special approach that accomplishes the same purpose is the old fashioned tandem bike – with two seats. The healthy person peddles on the front as the person with symptoms of Parkinson’s peddles on the back – keeping up so to speak.

It is not 80 RPM that is critical in my personal opinion. It is that the person on the back is being helped to go at a rate a little faster than they can do on their own. Tandem’s give both persons something fun to do together. And, both benefit from the exercise.

My hunch (without having any evidence) is that the Theracyle is probably great for people. I also suspect there are alternatives (like the tandem bikes) that are less costly. Your husband could try out forced exercise at a health club to see how his body reacts to the exercise approach. It doesn’t have to be on a Theracyle.

I do know they are working on some programming for the Theracycle specifically for Parkinson’s. That will certainly prove interesting and promising I would suspect.

Whatever you decide, please let let me know the outcome. As you are well aware, I will spread the word!

All the best,

Question:

Firstly, of course you are most welcome to quote my letter as signed Robert W (London)

Secondly your book and Meditations are proving thoroughly uplifting and sustaining. Before I found your site were the Dark Ages but thanks to yourself I am on the Road to Recovery and the New Renaissance.

Thirdly I’ve been rather perturbed by reading two books by Janice Walton- Hadlock of pdrecovery.org. By virtue of the similarity of site-name I Guess you must know of her.

My worry is that by putting myself on the Road to Recovery, obviously I am going to want to wean myself off the drugs that I’m on, as indeed John Coleman said he had done. But do I risk being one of the unlucky minority for whom the cocaine-like addiction to the meds stirs in vengeance and smashes back at me? I realize that you can’t act as a doctor advising on medicines, and also I’m sure that you are very watchful in not antagonizing the stealthy gods of the Pharmaceutical industry.

However it is a deep undiscussed issue which worries me enormously I hope you might be able to air somehow on your Radio show. Could you even invite Janice on to discuss the issue?

Robert W (London)

Response:

I have forwarded a request for Janice to be a guest on my radio show. I know she is very busy, but I hope she accepts. She has years and years of experience with this issue at her clinic.

Question:

I would love to listen to your station. how do I go about that? I live in Phoenix, AZ and have had Parkinson’s Disease since I was 54. U have had the symptoms about 10 years before being diagnosed by the medical industry. Have no clue how I got this disease. Of course my life as I knew is no longer. Medications help a little but the side effects are the pits.

I have not met any-one in the Phoenix market that will help with out wanting a lot of monies. As you know any chronic medical problem will financially break you. The naturpath’s I have gone too have really no recovery steps. Of course the medical industrial and insurance companies do not recognizes this recovery path, which is a mistake.

Response:

The radio station is an internet station which means you can listen from anywhere in the world. There are two ways to listen.

First, you can call 347-945-5358 and listen in during the show. The call in number always stays the same and the program airs every Thursday at 11:00 am pacific time.

Second, you can connect through your computer by visiting the following web address:

http://www.blogtalkradio.com/parkinsons-recovery

There is also a link to the radio program on the right side of this posting. If you miss the live program you can always download any of the programs to your computer (the MP3 files) for listening at a later time. Or, you can download the MP3 file to your IPOD and listen while exercising (or doing other things).

The radio program Thursday (July 16th) is a question and answer session with John Coleman. John is a naturopath doctor from Australia who himself was diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 1995. He is symptom free today and helps other people now find relief from their symptoms.

Comment:

I tuned into the recorded version of your interview with Leif last night. I could not listen to it for very long as the part where he experienced much difficulty moving around and talking, and when he apologized– it really bothered me. So I exited the show.

I can honestly say that he dashed my hopes somewhat. I felt somewhat frightened and depressed. I was hoping to hear the voice of the motivated, and strongly positive author, “Leif”. Didn’t expect ‘off times”. It recalled to me the supposed later stages of this condition, and of how dreary a future this condition could prove to be for me. ( Now maybe I should have stayed on line and listened to all — but I couldn’t.)

However a good thing. It re- emphasized to me how very important it is for me to listen to my own body and deal with it day by day, and not fixate on what may/may not happen to me in the future, down the road. Each case of Parkinsons Disease seems to be different depending on so many influencing factors. Everyone seems to go through this neurological condition differently.

Now for me after my diagnosis in’ 98 , I am fairing well, all things considered. But it takes effort to stay well and it takes time, and it takes attitude! I used to receive mail from the Parkinson’s organizations here, inviting me to attend meetings having to do with: falling, drooling, freezing, depression, suicide, support for spouses, making a will etc. Talk about gloom and doom. So I unsubscribed to such mail.

I make a practice of staying away from websites, articles, presentations of the same persuasion, because they are NOT helpful at this time and may never be– who knows. It is just more positive for me to practice and adopt a lifestyle that channels my energy and thoughts in a more positive way, to surround myself with people and circumstances that celebrate life — sunshine, nature, spirituality, music, friends, travel, vegetarian food, exercise, breathing, laughing yoga. Some may say that I have my” neck stuck in the sand” , “to face the music”, “to accept my disease”. I think not.

In the days and weeks following my diagnosis in ’98, I spent many a day and dark hour, dwelling entirely on this “di sease”. I found myself buried in a very dark place, a deep hole, thankfully I was able to crawl out. I never wish to return there!

So sorry( my opinion), that Leif experienced ‘off times’ during his talk, because he had a wonderful message to convey. I did read some excerpts from his book, and I do share in, and believe in much that he writes. Now maybe the rest of the show was entirely different, but….

Just someone sharing her thoughts having and dealing with” Parkinson’s” recovery.

Response:

What a fascinating report of your reaction to my interview with Leif this week, author of I Have Parkinsons But Parkinsons Does Not Have Me. Your experience is a true testament to how easy it is to be sucked into the dark and dreary negative belief template about Parkinsons that continues to linger out there in the ethers. As you so eloquently describe, it is so easy to be trapped by the negative belief template. Crawling out of it can sometimes feel like the challenge of breaking out of jail.

I think the actual experience of listening to my interview with Leif patterns your same experience over the years since your own diagnosis eleven years ago. Deep depression initially followed by a determination to engage the activities that help you feel great everyday. You are probably wondering what happened in the second part of the interview?

Leif took a mere ten minute break in the interview to meditate by breathing and grounding. His symptoms vanished. When you hear the second part of the interview you hear a voice of strength and power (though of course English is not his native language). It is a true testament to the reality that by setting his intent to move out of fear and paying attention to his body, his symptoms vanished in a flash. Healing happens in the moment. You do not have to wait years.

His symptoms were up during the first ten minutes of the interview because it was a stressful experience. After all, he was not just have a friendly chat with me. The interview was being recorded. Thousands of people will hear the interview. Once he was able to relieve the stress of doing the interview, all of his symptoms resolved.

Listening to the process of my interview with Leif is really the same experience you have had over the years as you successfully were able to shift from being trapped in the belief template of fear into a belief template of health and wellness. You both are doing quite well indeed now, but it was also a struggle for both of you in the beginning. I suspect this is a familiar process for many people.

If it ever feels right to you, you can always download the interview and fast forward the recording about 12 minutes. You will be delighted with what you hear in the second part of my interview with Leif.

Thanks again for sending in your thoughts. You have helped so many people by telling us all about your own experience with Parkinsons.

Here is where you can download the interview if you every decide to give it a second try:

Question:

As I told you on the broadcast you held this week past: I AM LISTENING TO YOU! I am tired if feeling bad EVERYDAY!!

Since reading this today I WANT TO GET OFF MY ARTIFICIAL MEDS but don’t know exactly what to replace them. I have beefed up my immune system starting 1-3 months with CoQ10-12mgs/daily, Vit E- 32mgs/daily; Vit C-300mgs/ daily along with MACUNA – 50% L-Dopa……….ALL NATURAL MEDS provided by God…. I am currently on Carbidopa-Levodopa – 50/200 4Xdaily, Mirapex-1.5mg/3 X daily, Benicar (B/P) 40/12.5mg daily………….how do I do this safely to not FREEZE, SHAKE to death, toes CURLING UNDER to lots of pain thigh and knee pain,,,,,,,etc…….

I have begun MOSTLY vegetarian diet, high fiber, fish, eat most daily intake of protein end of day, etc……..

I hear so much – even following Michael J Fox these past couple weeks on television – but feel mainly confused BUT DETERMINED to RECOVER FROM PARKINSONS.

I have very little money due to EXTRAORDINARY business / personal financial loss so I have difficulty even committing to John Coleman’s $49/ 12-step deal.

Are you in a position to advise me how I can JUST START recovery now ——– rather than later?

Regards
Joan

Response:

You have taken the most important step. You have set the clear intention to heal. Our thoughts are the most powerful force in the universe, so by eliminating negative thought forms and establishing for yourself a clear commitment to heal, good things are happening.

Healing does not happen tomorrow or next year. It is happening now, in this very moment. It happens as a benefit of your thoughts and your actions. Stay tuned to my weekly radio program. You will hear suggestions there that will help you now. Your body knows how to heal itself. You just have to listen.
