Lyme Disease and Parkinson’s

Question:

I have been following your work carefully, and  I thank you so  much.  I am 45 years young.  I was diagnosed by 3 PD specialists and 2 other neurologists only 9 months ago, but have had symptoms for almost 2 years.  My symptoms are not improving but my attitude has been upbeat due to your work and John Coleman’s.  I continue to try all sorts of holistic natural therapies.  Many of my symptoms are changing and new ones popping up quickly.

I live in an area (Maryland) that has lots of deer ticks and Lyme.  I was just diagnosed with chronic Lyme’s via the IGeneX  lab by a wonderful Lyme Literate MD.  This may be the smoking gun (so to speak!).  I can keep you updated if you  would like.  I’ve been told from the beginning by Neurologists that my Parkinson’s symptoms were “A-typical”.

Have you gone down the research path for a PD and Lyme Link?

Thanks for all that you do!

Susan

Response:

There is an overlap between the symptoms of Parkinson’s and Lyme Disease. The research suggests that some people are misdiagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease when in fact they have Lyme Disease. From how I see it, this is a possibility that is often overlooked. The symptoms are very similar.

Of course, the recommended treatments are vastly different. This is one of the reasons I talk so much about strengthening your immune system regardless of the diagnosis.

We all look forward to your updates on this unique path of recovery.

  1. Is it possible that Lyme can be the cause of Parkinson’s ? I know they haven’t quite discovered a cause of Parkinson’s and they are saying that it’s likely due to “environmental factors.” Maybe these “environmental” factors are ticks! My dad was just diagnosed with Parkinson’s a couple weeks ago and I am going to push for more extensive Lyme testing, as the initial tests came back negative. There’s a lab in CA that does really extensive testing so I ordered a kit directly from them. Hoping for some answers.

  2. Yes indeed. Many symptoms of a Lyme infection are the same as the symptoms of Parkinson’s disease. There are actually a wide variety of factors that will offset the sensitive neurological system (including all sorts of toxins, food allergeis and the effects of trauma).

  3. My parkinson Doctor is a little confused. I was diagnosed 3years ago with PD but in 3 years nothing as changed. Lose my balance and can’t walk without a cane. But nothing else. I had Lymes disease about 3 or 4 years ago. Took some meds. Was tested again and it was cleared up. What do you think.

  4. Hi:

I suspect it would pay at this point to put everything on pause and focus on determining the cause(s) of the problem. Lyme could potentially still be the issue or there may be a variety of
other factors at play. I am offering the 2016 Jump Start to Recovery course this summer. We focus on helping students determine the cause(s). So, that would be one option you might
    want to consider.
